Why Sugar Down There? (Intimate Hair Removal)

Sugar. We consume it everyday through some of our favorite foods and drinks. However, did you know that it can be used to remove those pesky pubes and body hair? This process is known as “Sugaring”…literally.

This ancient method of hair removal originated in Egypt back in those times that they talk about in History class, the times we fell asleep. So you may have missed this one; but no problem. Here’s the tea on the sugar>>>> Also known as ‘Persian Waxing’, this method of hair removal involves mixing together 3 simple ingredients for the simplest form of it. All things that you are more than likely have sitting in your fridge. Sugar, Lemon, and Water…. Okay so Lemonade! Exactly what you use to make lemonade, you can also make sugar just different measurements of each ingredient obviously. But if we’re being honest, it’s probably best to leave it to the professionals but it can still make a great DIY home project. So how does it work you ask?

Sugaring is an all natural version of hair removal that closely resembles the doings of waxing. On the flip side waxing is definitely a lot more painful with the usage of more chemicals (ouch). Although they have similar results, the techniques, experience and long-term results are what separates them completely.

Here’s how>>>>

Waxing:

  1. Pulls in the opposite direction of hair growth (leaving you prone to more broken and ingrown hairs if not performed correctly )

  2. Has to be scalding hot to actually work!

  3. Super Sticky afterwards!

  4. Really sore Afterwards!

  5. Takes off the first layer of your skin (can cause skin thinning and bruises)

  6. Grows back in 2 weeks

  7. Can cause allergic reactions if you’re absolutely unsure of what’s in the wax!

If we’re keeping it a bean, I would have moved on to why sugaring is the best bet after the first reason. Because, really… who wants ingrown hairs? There are many wax brands out there along with many estheticians and cosmetologists that specialize in waxing but what irks the sugaring industry is the fact that we never bash the beauty of waxing because realistically beauty is pain. But… that’s everyone else. I’m here to tell you the truth. Waxing hurts like hell girl!!! Not that sugaring is a saint, but look at the contrasts.

Sugaring:

  1. Pulls in the direction of hair growth leaving you less prone to broken and ingrown hairs.

  2. Can be performed with soft, cold paste for more coarse hairs

  3. Washes right off with water and doesn’t require more chemicals for clean up

  4. Feels just fine, afterwards you can take on the world

  5. Exfoliates the first layer of skin leaving it smooth, not sore

  6. Takes 4+ weeks to grow back (varies on genetics)

  7. Lower risks of hhaving allergic reaction

Now, that you see the comparison… let’s talk about the best times to get these things done:

For all of you ladies shaving out there and mad that it grows back in only an hour, whenever you plan on getting sugared, you may want to wait at least a week right after shaving. This allows your hair to grow out to at least 1/4 an inch long, but realistically I doubt anyone reading this has a ruler on them so in our terms, a grain of rice in length or enough to pinch with your fingertips!

Worst Times to get Sugared:

This wouldn’t be for your esthi, but for you. As an esthetician we see just about everything you can think of when it comes to intimate hair removal. On your wax/sugaring form you may see a question referring to your cycle such as “when is it due"?” or “Are you currently ovulating’ Now you may be thinking, “girl… Why if I’m not bleeding now?” For multiple reasons as an esthetician I care about your menstruating periods more than you. When our period is on or near, we tend to be a lot more sensitive emotionally (obviously) and physically. 5 days before and after your cycle your body is full of hormones that come around this time only called prostaglandin. This is the devil that makes us sensitive in these areas.

If you booked a wax appointment and you’re pressed for time, yet your period still hasn’t gone off, here’s what you should do.>>>>>

  1. Talk to your wax lady about rescheduling in unexpected times. She is a woman also and she gets it. Some women that are on birth control tend to start menstruating unexpectedly. Hey, one of those things called being a woman.

  2. Grab a tampon or diva cup. It is best to plunge the blood right before your appointment if it is okay with your esthi. However, with this option, make sure you communicate that with your esthi. Never leave them out in the wind. It would be terrible if your tampon string is hiding and flies out on the sugar paste (ouch and ew)

  3. Make sure you aren’t too heavy into the blood gang. As it is okay with most esthis to wax on your period, you still don’t want to go on the very first day as you’re likely to bleed on the table with the first day being the heaviest. Sorry that we have to take it there, but it happens…

How long and How much?

A sugared Brazilian or Bikini can take anywhere from 20-50 minutes and price ranges anywhere from $30-$65 . This depends on the experience and quality of work. Sugaring is typically a bit more expensive when it comes to performance due to the fact that the sugarist is typically maneuvering the sugar around with their hand and fingertips making the service a true skill that can be perfected by the right-minded esthi (our CEO)

Aftercare:

Here’s a list of dos and dont’s with your new baldie down there after a great sugaring session>>>>

Do:

  • Exfoliate the treated area 7 days after your session to promote one-direction hair growth and avoid ingrown hairs.

  • Make your follow up maintenance appointment within 3-6 weeks to weaken your hair follicles to be able to eventually lead to NO Hair growth at all with the consistency of course!

  • Update your esthi on the hair growth results. The longer, the better!

Don’t:

  • Submerge in water for 24 hours. Your pores down there are open and sensitive, submerging in a tub of warm water can cause major irritation.

  • Engage in sexual activity for at least 24 hours. This one speaks for itself, avoid the sweaty encounters… just for 24 hours please, then have a ball. (Remember this is the don’t list)

  • Wear panties for 24 hours following your appointment. LET HER BREATHE! A lot of women create bacteria this way. She’s already hot and sweaty from the session, wear sweats or a dress to your appointment for that cooling effect!

All in all, we’re hoping this inspired you to try sugaring. You’ll love it and so will your lady!
